Lionel Messi has been named as FIFA’s Player of the Year for a fifth time, as he beat off the challenge of Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar to claim the prestigious award.

Messi enjoyed a sparkling 2015, as he led Barcelona to a Spanish league and cup double, before adding Champions League glory to his record as he helped the Catalan giants beat Juventus in last season's final.

Brazilian great and former winner of the prize Kaka presented the award to Messi, who offered up a gracious speech as he accepted the prize once again.

"It's incredible this is my fifth. It's much more than anything I've dreamed of as a kid," he said.

"I want to thank everyone who voted for me and I want to thank my team-mates – without them none of this would be possible.

"Lastly, I want to thank football in general for everything it has brought me, both the bad and the good, because it has made me grow and learn."

Messi secured 41.33 per cent of the vote, with Portugal hitman Ronaldo getting 27.76 per cent and third-placed Brazil striker Neymar 7.86 per cent.

Argentine legend Messi was an outstanding favourite to claim the prize, with goals like this last year adding to his already glittering legacy.

Messi's goal against Athletic Bilbao (above) was also nominated for the FIFA Puskas award, which celebrates the goal of the year, yet it was Wendell Lira who carried off that prize.

Twisting and turning through the air, Lira managed this nimble half-bicycle kick on his way to ground for Goianesia in Brazil's Goiano against Atletico-GO.

Lionel Messi disappoints as Pogba shocks in Ballon d’Or fashion stakes

Messi arrives for this year’s Ballon d’Or gala

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has turned up in some pretty garish suits for FIFA’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in recent years, but he has followed a more conventional sartorial guide for this year’s gala event.

Twitter was awash with rumours of Messi's suit of choice, as he looked to follow up his classic spotty outfit from 2013 (below):

And who can forget this wine effort from last year, when he finished as runner-up to Cristiano Ronaldo in the race to be crowned as World Player of the Year:

This year's suit was a lot less exciting, but at least Messi is expected to pick up the main prize this time after his sparkling 2015 that included a Champions League triumph.

If Messi's suit was a bit of a disappointment, then Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba was determined to stand out from the crowd with this little effort that could only be described as different:
